San Antonio, TX-

In a game of runs, it was the Lady Chargers who would close the second quarter on a 13-3 blitz, reclaiming the lead, 29-26, entering the halftime break. Alina Hernandez, Rakiya Nelson, and Makayla Walker would all get buckets, responding to the Panthers own run. From then on the Lady Chargers would not look back the rest of the contest.

The second half saw Churchill pull away, and lead by as many as nineteen points on an Alexis Martens point blank bucket, 54-35, late in the fourth quarter. Eventually securing the win, 56-43 and moving onto the Area Round.

Early on, O’Connor sophomore point guard Casey Chavez would carry the Panthers and not only keep them in it, but surge to a 23-16 second quarter lead. Her ability to slash, penetrate, finish, and also connect from the perimeter, fueled the Lady Panthers.

Wisely, Coach Grams would burn a Churchill timeout and the Lady Chargers would respond. Using a stifling defense, and closing with an offensive flurry, going to the halftime locker room, reclaiming a three-point advantage.

The third quarter continued with Churchill’s momentum. Hernandez and Nelson would pick up where they left off with the offensive surge and the defense would tighten up. The Lady Chargers would use a 17-7 advantage and head to the fourth quarter leading 46-33, and coast the finish line in securing their Bi-District Championship.

The senior duo of Hernandez and Nelson would pace Churchill as both finished with 18 points, and respectively 8 and 9 boards each (unofficially). The Lady Chargers now stand with an overall 29-5 mark, and prepare to face Vista Ridge in the Area round. Time, location, and date are still to be determined.

O'Connor finishes their season 19-15 overall. Casey Chavez had a game high of 20 points in the loss.
