Cougars use 1-2 punch to separate from Rattlers, start their "Road to the Dome"...

San Antonio, TX-

Bi-District action in the 6A ranks wrapped up on Tuesday night, and the defending 6A State Champion, Clark Cougars, took about eight minutes and then put it in gear. They would pull away from the Lady Rattlers at NISD Gym to secure the double digit victory.

Leading 16-6 after eight minutes of play, the Lady Cougars would tighten up the defense and Arianna Roberson (Duke Signee) would go to work down low. San Marcos had no answer for the 6’4” McDonalds All-American as she scored at will in the paint and crashed the boards.

Just before the break, point guard Natalie Huff (A&M Corpus Christi Signee), would race the length of the court in just over four seconds to lay it up at the horn and draw the foul. Huff would sink the free throw, giving the Cougs a 16 point advantage at the half, 33-17.

“Proud of the girls you know. Every game is a big game. Obviously that was a big win for us. We’re battling some injuries and health issues right now. For us to pretty much maintain a 20 point lead I’m pretty satisfied with that,” said Head Coach Rihana Houy.

The Rattlers would close to within 14 points after a bucket by sophomore Azariah Fennel, making it 50-36 late in the fourth quarter, but on the ensuing possession, Clark would answer.

From the right wing, Huff would have the perfect entry pass to Roberson, and as she fell to her right along the baseline, she managed to still bank the shot in with contact. She would hit the and one, essentially icing the game.

Coach Houy touched on how the Lady Cougars started, keyed in on their experience, and finished strong in route to their playoff win.

“Overall I’m proud of all three (Huff, Roberson, Kamryn Griffin), the whole team. I thought those three seniors did a good job of maintaining poise and just a couple of hiccups I’d like to go back and change. I think the senior leadership was really important for us tonight.”

Roberson finished with a game high 26 points and 12 rebounds. While Huff added 13 points, 6 steals and 5 assists in the Bi-District win. Fennel would lead the Lady Rattlers with 14 points and 7 rebounds.

Clark will now face Cedar Ridge in the Area round on Friday night with all the details to come.
