Clark wins their first ever State Championship, in it's own backyard...

San Antonio, TX-

Trailing by one point headed to the fourth quarter, 35-34, the Clark Cougars would not panic, flinch. They would grind offensively, and put on an impressive defensive exhibition that would limit Desoto to only two points in the entire fourth period.

It was a steady dose of Arianna Roberson who would score all eight of their points in the final minutes. Four free throws and two field goals were more than enough to compliment the Cougars defensive effort.

On the night they held the Eagles to 26% from the floor and forced them into 18 turnovers.

In the clutch, Roberson would connect on a jumper from the free throw line, making it 40-35, with 4:20 remaining, and would then add two free throws to make it a seven point advantage, and eventually secure the Championship, 42-37.

At the break, Clark held a 25-22 edge. Roberson had 12 points and 7 rebounds in the first sixteen minutes of play. All night, in and around the paint, the 6’4” junior was active and effective. She finished with 24 points, 15 rebounds, and was credited with 4 blocks. On several occasions she flew towards defenders showing her defensive range, and making it nearly impossible for Desoto shooters to get into any type of rhythm. For her performance, Roberson earned the 6A Championship MVP award.

Securing the programs first ever State Championship, and the second State Title coming home to San Antonio in five years (Judson 2019), is something that the Lady Cougars can certainly have the utmost pride in.

“That’s what we’ve been talking about for the past two years. We wanted it so badly for selfish reasons. We want to win a Championship for Clark basketball right, but winning it for our school, you saw the school pride out there, “ said Clark Head Coach Rihana Houy.

“The city of San Antonio was all in the stands and it’s not very often that San Antonio gets to represent like this. We’re always kind of like the dark horse. We set the stage, we put Clark on our jerseys and we took that group to the Allen tournament the last couple of years and I distinctly remember last year they didn’t know who San Antonio Clark was. Wherever we went, referees, coaches and players, just fans, where asking who we were. That’s really what set in for me.”

Being the last team standing is a tremendous accomplishment, but even more so in doing it by knocking off State Power Desoto. It serves as a very strong and eye opening accomplishment sure to garner the attention of hoop heads and would-be experts throughout the Lone Star State.  The Lady Cougars finish their season with a dominant 34-3 overall record, and a 6A State Championship to add to it.
