Austin, TX-

The lady Cavaliers matched up against Antonian High School Friday evening in a Central Texas non-district match up. The Lady Cavs took the lead early on with a strong performance in racing out to a twenty-four-point lead at the half.

Despite the barrage, the Lady Apaches would fight back in the second half and capitalize on free-throw opportunities, and a three-point play the hard way, by Melissa Hornedo who would make it a seven-point deficit, 47-40, but that would be the closest Antonian would get.

Lake Travis would end all momentum as Claire Kolkhorst in transition would scoop in a layup, pushing it back to a nine point lead, 49-40, and the Lady Cavaliers would wrap up the victory, 50-42.

At the onset it seemed Antonian would have the momentum thanks to a strong start from Zariah Todd and Carleigh Wenzel scoring the first points of the game and giving Antonian a 4-0 lead in the first two minutes. That lead was quickly evaporated by the Lady Cavaliers thanks to an on target three-pointer from Kolkhorst. Those points would be the first for her as she went on to lead Lake Travis with 15 points by the end of the night.

Near the end of the first period, Antonian was attempting to regain their rhythm thanks to a three from Wenzel, but that’s when Lake Travis would respond with a game changing burst.

The Lady Cavs would clamp down defensively and start torching the nets in the 2nd quarter, fueling a 16-2 run, giving them a 28-12 advantage late into the frame, that would essentially carry them the rest of the way.

Head Coach Kevin Bussinger was very clear when asked about his ladies performance, “That was our best half of basketball we’ve played for sure all year, we’ve been trying to find our best combinations and we’ve got a lot of talent on this team….above anything in that first half, we made some shots and that tends to make the game a lot easier”.

Following that excellent first half, leading 38-14 at halftime, the Lady Cavs would weather a few cold spells and ultimately gave up 13 points in free-throws alone in the next two quarters, but it still wasn’t enough as they prevailed with the “W” on Friday night. The Lady Cavaliers will next face off against Austin High School next week and hold an 8-8 record as they head into district play.

In defeat, Antonian falls to 18-9 on the season. Wenzel, a Virginia Tech commit did her best to help carry her team, leading the way with 18 points.
