Lady Cougars use a strong 3rd Q to pull away on Friday night...

San Antonio, TX-

At the half on Friday night, both Clark and Wagner headed to the locker room in what had been a very tight contest, both teams holding the lead multiple times, before the Lady Cougars would get a driving layup from Natalie Huff and another bucket to hold a tight, 35-31 halftime lead.

Once both teams emerged from the locker room, Clark looked like an entirely different team. The Lady Cougs were more aggressive on the offensive end, played physical, and ratcheted things up on defense. All those factors would add up to Clark storming out of the halftime break on a 13-4 run, quickly making it a 48-35 advantage.

Senior point guard Sydney Solitaire would swipe the rock at mid-court and go the remainder of the way for the layup making it a 13 point contest with 2:30 to play in the quarter. Clark would close out the period with an overall 18-9 edge, and the lead 53-40, heading to the finale.

The 4th quarter saw more separation as 6’2” junior Aaliyah Roberson asserted herself, used her size and length to control the game from the paint. She would have back to back buckets down low, deep on the block, would draw the “And 1,” and sink the free throw to give the Lady Cougars a 61-42 lead near the midway mark of the quarter.

Clark would cruise the rest of the way, registering the 74-50 win over Wagner, and will now face Cedar Ridge HS, in the area round. Clark moves to a 15-1 overall mark.

Credit to Wagner who in the first half was basket for basket with the Cougars, and led 19-17 after the first period. Sophomore Shavani Sancho came out firing connecting on two deep treys early on, and senior Jordan Weaver showed a nice touch around the hoop and from mid-range as well. Late in the 2nd quarter, Weaver would connect on two free-throws to tie it up 31 all, but from that point on, the offense sputtered for the Lady Tbirds. Sancho and Weaver finished with 18 and 19 points respectively.

As the lady Cougars battled in the first half, the unsung hero was freshman Natalie Huff. The freshman showed no fear coming off the bench and letting it rip right away. In a very short span, she connected on three treys, and registered all of her 15 points in the first half.
