San Antonio, TX-

Trailing by one point with less than forty-five seconds to play, Vivian Castro’s three-pointer from the right wing would fall short, but with one bounce, would find its way into Reinha Williams hands. She took one power dribble, gathered herself and banked in the shot on the right side of the block for what would be the eventual game winner. SA Veterans Memorial would edge Mansfield Timberview 45-44, in an exciting semifinal match-up that took all 32 minutes to decide.

After Williams basket, twenty-six seconds remained. On their end, Timberview could not find the hoop to answer. A Veterans Memorial turnover ensued, and after a frenetic sequence of missing another close shot, the ball went out of bounds under the Lady Wolves basket with 4.3 seconds to play.

Veterans Memorial Head Coach Tina Camacho commented on what the message was for her ladies as they made their final defensive stand of the evening.

“They have a lot of in-bounds, but we were trying to see how they were setting up. We knew when the big girl was throwing it in, they were going to key in on her. Those girls they prepared, they prepared and really understood what we were trying to do that least 2-3 days that we practiced, and they executed it.”

The combo of senior Sahara Jones and junior Reinha Williams were huge all night for the Lady Patriots. Jones logged a double-double with 18pts and 10rebs, showing off her range knocking down two treys and battling through rough, physical play.

Williams finished just shy of double digits in the points column, but here timing with rebounds and being in the right place at the right time was huge. She pulled down a monster 12 boards and had 8 points.

“She’s our most improved player, I’m telling you! She does the great things that nobody else wants to do. She knows it. Her confidence is building and she’s become a key player for us," said Camacho.

In the first half, the contest was tied up after one quarter 14 all. Veterans Memorial would close the second stanza on an 10-4 run, giving them an eight point cushion, 28-20.

Sahara Jones would get an easy bucket from in close in the paint, on the next possession down for the Lady Patriots, she would connect on a trey from the LT wing, and point guard Vivian Castro would also connect from downtown to help close the quarter.

Veterans Memorial will now face Frisco Liberty at 3 p.m. Saturday afternoon, for the Class 5A State Championship.
