Jags Run Through Roughriders

By: Antonio G. Castillo

San Antonio, TX-

From the onset Johnson HS came out with the throttle fully engaged and in the matter of a few minutes, led 15-0. Delivering a couple of stunning blows before the Roughriders would get their first points and gather their bearings.

Juniors Shane Johnson and Joseph Taylor would drain back to back treys, making it 8-0, and the Jags would reel off 7 more points before Daqwon Kindred would connect on a three-pointer for Roosevelt, making it a 15-3 game.

The onslaught continued for the first quarter, with Johnson leading 25-7 after one. The second frame didn’t see too much difference. The lid did come off the rim for Roosevelt just a bit, and the Roughriders switched to a full court press to create some turnovers and easy buckets.

Initially the press did lead to some turnovers, but point guard Kendall Dow and the rest of the Jags adjusted and the press became nullified, as Johnson would take a 42-26 lead into the locker room.

Kindred would come off the bench and lead the comeback attempt for Roosevelt, finishing with 17pts for the game, and junior point guard Corey Jackson had 10pts at the break, but was neutralized in the second half because of foul trouble. He would only have 3pts in the second half finishing with 13 for the game.

Credit to the Jags who responded every time Roosevelt made a run, and there were a few in the second half. Vincent Mann would make 1 of 2 free throws for the Roughriders with under six to play, making it a 52-43 deficit, but that was the closest Roosevelt would get the entire game.

Shane Johnson would add a back breaking trey from the right wing for the Jags, and David Payne would go in for an easy layup, building back up a 14 point edge, 59-45 with less than 4 minutes to play. Johnson would secure the 65-54 win.

With only one week left in the season, both teams are now 11-1 atop the district. Overall, Johnson moves to 27-7 (11-1), and with the loss Roosevelt falls to 26-6 (11-1).

One thing is for sure, the stretch run in district 27-6A is definitely one to keep your eye on.
