Cibolo, TX-

District 26-6A is absolutely loaded this year on the girls side, and two of the top teams expected to battle to the wire took center court on Tuesday evening. Steele hosted Clemens and the Lady Knights used a a second half surge, outscoring the Lady Buffs, 27-19, to go ahead and secure the 59-44 victory in district play.

For the most part, it was a back and forth game in the first sixteen minutes. Freshman guard Aysia Proctor would sink a three-pointer from the left wing. The previous possession she took a steal, went 80 feet and laid it in for the Lady Buffs, leaving everybody tied up at 19 all. Steele would answer as Bria McClure and Sydney Love would connect on their own 3-ptrs and help Steele maintain a seven point halftime edge, 32-25.

To start the 3rd Qrtr, TCU signee Aja Holmes and McClure would come out on back to back possessions with quick buckets and also drawing the whistle, giving them a double-digit lead, 36-25. Junior Aaliyah Ellis was pivotal in crashing the boards in the third frame, the guard had 6 rebounds for the game, with 5 of them coming during the 3rd period.

Starting the fourth the Lady Knights did not let up, leading 42-31, senior Zaya Price would go coast to coast, lay it up on the left side of the hoop while falling down, getting the bucket, and the and one. Giving Steele a 45-31 lead, that they would not relinquish.

Afterwards, Steele Head Coach Jeffery Chatman talked about his teams start to the second half, being the difference in the game.

"We talk about that a lot in our program. That first four minutes of the 3rd quarter is setting the tone for the rest of the game. I thought my kids came out and played very well, especially bouncing back after that Judson game. I was most impressed with our defense tonight. Really getting a defensive turnaround."

Junior post Asjha Leake would make her contributions to the scoring column with a bucket down low, pushing the lead to it's biggest margin, 55-38, with 2:07 to play, as the Lady Knights would finish with the 15 point win. For the game Leake tallied 13pts, Price would put in 14 & 6, and Holmes finished with a game high 15 points.

"Any given night any of our kids can light it up on the scoreboard. We don't really wanna focus there, just focus on playing team ball. Getting whatever the other team allows us to have. It's a great thing when you can have that type of talent with girls that can give it to you on any given night," said Chatman.

Senior guard Alesia Marshall in only her second game back from injury, off the bench, also finished just shy of double-digits, putting in 9 points connecting with some timely buckets, and adding 5 rebounds in the win.

For the Lady Buffaloes, do not take your eyes off of them. They're a very young squad, do not have a senior starter, and are very talented. Sophomore Deja Hinson paced them with 12pts, showing range in draining 2 treys. Freshman Aysia Proctor, who plays like a senior, is extremely quick, also very dangerous from the perimeter, added 11pts in the loss.

With the win, Steele moves to 17-7 overall, and 3-1 in District. Clemens falls to 17-8, and 2-2, in what is the most competitive girls district in San Antonio, and arguably the Tri-Regions.
