T-birds Pull Away For The Big Win

By: Antonio G. Castillo

Converse, TX-

As usually is the case, between neighborhood rivalries, Judson and Wagner played with high intensity most of the game and the scoreboard mirrored it at halftime, as Wagner fought to a 37-32 lead.

The turning point in the game was a lockdown 3rd quarter by the T-birds that saw them break open a close match and turn it into a blowout. Seniors Journee Phillips and Braelon Seals set the pace for the T-birds and launched a scoring barrage, and a defensive showcase, creating steals, hitting the glass, and in the blink of an eye, outscoring Judson, 26-3 in the period. That put Wagner, comfortably in front, 63-35 heading to the final quarter.

The Thunderbirds would cruise the rest of the way and register the 75-57 win, pushing them to 2-0 on the young season.

In the first half alone, Phillips had a double-double, logging 12pts & 10 rebs, finishing with 26 and 16. He was a monster on the glass all night and the Rockets had no one to match his physical style of play or intensity.

Guard Braelon Seals also helped lead the scoring attack and showed off his point guard skills, playing most of the game at the point position. Unofficially he registered 6 assists on the night, 5 steals, and added 18pts for a solid 1-2 punch. The range on his perimeter game was also eye catching, as he knocked down 3 treys and two of them came with some distance behind the arc.

For the Rockets, a pair of seniors Kyonte Holder and Ambrose Johnson, would lead them and bring them back early on as Wagner had opened a double-digit lead, only to see Judson respond. Johnson would connect on a three-pointer from the right wing as the 2nd quarter winded down, making it a 35-32 game. Wagner would add a bucket for the halftime score. Johnson and Holder at the half both had double digits, 11pts & 10pts respectively.

The 3rd quarter was a completely different story and the turning point in the game. It propelled Wagner and helped secure the victory.
