ACH Classic: Day 1 Recap

By: AlamoCityHoops Staff

San Antonio, TX-

Our inaugural AlamoCityHoops Classic tipped off on Friday morning as 16 high schools ascended on the campus of San Antonio Christian.

Here’s a brief recap on the teams who won both of their games and are headed into the semifinals for a shot at the tournament title, on championship Saturday.

Odessa Permian HS (2-0)
From the onset of the 9 a.m. tip, the Panthers did not mess around, going for a tourney high 113 points in their first contest, and beating their second opponent, Round Rock Homeschool, by 27 points. On the day, the MOJO had an average winning margin of 65 points per contest. Shy Stephens-Deary (2020) had a game high 23 points in their dismantling of Sunnybrook Christian, pacing the way for five Panthers in double-digits. Jose Taylor had 16pts and Nakavieon White added 15. It was Deary again who led the way with 17 points in their win over the Raiders.
Next Game: vs George Ranch @ 12:30 p.m.

Midland Christian HS (2-0)

Another West Texas team who was impressive on the day. Cruising by Lehman HS, 67-38, and then pulling away from an athletic and talented, Cedar Hill team, 60-43. Combo guard Joseph Venzant (2021), showed why he’s a D1 target, posting 23 points in their win over the Longhorns, showing off nice touch around the hoop and from mid-range, sprinkled in with some outside perimeter buckets. He added a team high 20pts in their “W” over Lehman. For a guard, Venzant is a solid force on the boards, impacting on both ends of the floor.

Next Game: vs Burleson Centennial @ 12:30 p.m.

George Ranch HS (2-0)

The Longhorns are the only Houston area team in our ACH Classic, and they helped rep H-town by arguably playing in the game of the day. Junior guard Ori Limbrick would drive the lane and get a running one hander to fall with 1.3 seconds to lift them to the dramatic 69-67 win over Boswell HS. Limbrick had a team high 19pts while, freshman Zion Parker (2023), almost matched him point for point, adding 18 in the win. They dispatched Jubilee SA, 89-36 for their first win on the day, and now will face the  the Panthers in the semis.

Next Game: vs Odessa Permian @ 12:30 p.m.

Burleson Centennial HS (2-0)

Similar to George Ranch, their final game on Friday was in the balance almost all the way until triple zeroes. As St. Stephens HS rallied from a double digit deficit to tie it late, it was a last second free throw by Zach Bolf who helped put Centennial over the top. He pitched in 15pts, and 6'8" big man Jacob Stuckey, was very effective down low, using his height and length around the hoop for the Spartans, with 20 pts. In their victory over KIPP, senior guard Tayton Conerway, went off for 27pts, connecting on 3 treys in the win.

Next Game: vs Midland Christian HS @ 12:30 p.m.
